If you’re in Italy in late September and want to enjoy a vintage bike ride on the beautiful Ligurian coast, all while soaking in the Mediterranean sun and sea, look no further than the seaside suburb of Genoa, Porticciolo di Nervi, home to the La Superba Vintage bike ride.
What – La Superba is a small vintage bike ride that takes in the coastal villages of Camogli, Santa Rocco, Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino and is limited to only 200 riders. Hugging the coastline, you ride either 80km or 65km on a vintage bike and wear a woollen jersey.
Do – Take a walk along the spectacular 1.8km path, the ‘Anita Garibaldi’ which sits at the top of the rocky cliff above the water, and has mesmerising sea views, restaurants and places to sit to enjoy the sunset along the way.
Drink – Indulge in a spritz or negroni with your pre dinner aperitivo as you watch the boats sail in against a sunset backdrop.
Stay – Find one of the grand old Palazzo’s in the area that will draw you back into a more refined era.
Ride – Unpack the woollen jersey and prepare to embrace the golden age of cycling with 200 other aficionado’s of old school steel. Revel in the camaraderie and take in the beautiful and iconic Ligurian towns.
Where – Nestled in the Golfo Paradiso on the Ligurian coast, between Genoa and Portofino, is the beautiful little fishing village of Porticciolo di Nervi.
Eat – The homemade Trofie al Pesto is a dish that should not be missed. We enjoyed this regional pasta of Liguria at a couple of restaurants, with our top picks being at Bagni Medusa for lunch with a crisp, fresh glass of rose or Bistrot del Porticciolo for dinner, followed by an amazing, homemade gelati.
Shop – Buy a little piece of Liguria, with a seascape painted by one of the local artists.
Rest – Catch some Italian sun at one of the amazing beach clubs built into the the rocky cliffs. Our pick for the perfect ‘beach day’ was at the Bagni Medusa.
The La Superba vintage bike ride is the perfect add on if you’re participating in L’Eroica, Gaiole in Chianti as it is always on the Sunday before. Find out more about our L’Eroica cycling tour and how to best add on a La Superba weekend.
