The Magic of a Very Special Giro d’Italia

The 2022 Giro d’Italia was a special edition for us. It not only had summer like conditions, great racing and an Australian GC winner, in Jai Hindley but it marked our first Italian cycling tour with guests who had been waiting with us to enjoy the sensational experience after the enforced “covid break”.

Below is a photoessay of our 9 day Giro d’Italia cycling tour in 2022 which took us from Torino, across the Alps and into the Prosecco laden hills of the Veneto.

The stage 14 circuit in Torino was nothing short of an exhilarating procession and festa of all things cycling, that included multiple ascents of the beautiful Superga and Colle Della Maddalena, with its 23% pinch.

Our non-riding experience in Torino took us on a walking tour of this stunning city, and on day 2 to the spectacular Reggia di Venaria Reale, a baroque masterpiece and one of the largest regal residences in the world. Built in the 1600’s and now UNESCO listed, this palace and its gardens made for a magical morning before joining the riding group in the afternoon to watch the Giro finish. Our cooking class and long lunch in the stunning Prosecco hills was also a highlight of the tour.

The iconic Passo Dello Stelvio represented the riding pinnacle of the tour for some of the group. With perfect conditions for the ascent, everyone was able to place a ” ” next to this one on their bike bucket list.

Exploring and staying in the northern provinces of Piedmont, Lombardia and the Veneto, gives you plenty of opportunity to taste the local specialities and classics from each area, including Vitello Tonnato, Tajarjn, Pizzoccheri and of course the iconic Tiramisu in its home region.

The mobile pink party is truly amazing for its vibe, noise and energy, and for the passion that follows it everywhere and is always so evident.  Following the stages and climbing the same mountains is always a superb experience, and perched on the top of Mortirolo and also il Muro di Ca’ del Poggio with the other tifosi, always had us in the thick of the action.

Aperitivo in its birthplace, Torino and a Prosecco degustation where we enjoyed trying 3 different styles of this delicious wine in its home region, along with a range of home made salumi, all added to the superbly authentic experience.

With another Giro cycling tour wrapped up, we now need to wait for the unveiling of the the route to be announced later this year and the magic that we’ll see, feel and taste on the tour next year. If you would like more details of what to expect on our Giro d’Italia tour click here.
