Last week in Milan, the official route of the Giro d’Italia 2020 was announced, and shortly after the launch, we released our Giro d’Italia cycling tour itinerary for 2020.
Fortunate to have been able to watch the feed live and receive confirmation of some of the rumours that we were privy to in the lead up, we were able to very quickly secure an itinerary of rides and accommodation locations that will see us right amongst the action of the Giro in its final week, while also providing a diverse food, wine and cultural experience.
The Giro is sure to have a heightened buzz next year with it being the first edition of the Giro d’Italia that Peter Sagan will ride and while surprisingly, there are no stages going into the heart of the central Dolomites, it will be great to be part of a stage that takes in Stelvio, as well as the little known road up to Torri di Fraele and Lago di Cancano for a mountain top finish. This will be a sensational day out at the Giro.
Our Giro Cycling Tour itinerary for 2020 highlights include:
Ride
- Our warm up ride will take in a few of the “interesting” points along the TT course and the Strada del Prosecco, including the Muro di Ca del Poggio; 37km and 620m
- We’ll see the ‘the race of truth’ with Stage 14, taking in the start, a few points mid-course and the finish; 70km and 1500m
- We’ll be part of a mountain top finish at Piancavallo after taking on this challenging climb ourselves; 103km and 1800m
- When the Pro’s take their rest day, we’ll take on the majestic Monte Grappa en route to Bassano del Grappa; 85km and 2180m
- Away from the race for a day, we’ll conquer a favourite of the locals; the climb of Foza from the Valstagna side; 70km and 1550m
- We’ll be in the thick of the action at the Stage 17 start in Bassano del Grappa, before taking on the mercilessly steep gradients of Passo Mortirolo; 59k and 2180m
- For Stage 18, we’ll ride up to then watch what we believe will be an awesome mountain top finish at Lago di Cancano; 40km and 1080m
- On our final day, we’ll climb the iconic Passo dello Stelvio as the ultimate ride to cap off 8 sensational days of riding; 46km and 1600m or a longer 95k and 3455m
Stay
We have secured fantastic family run, villa style accommodation in each of the 3 locations we’ll stay in:
- Conegliano, Veneto; where the remains of a 10th-century castle are situated on a hill that dominates the town and the home of Italy’s oldest and most prestigious wine school, Scuola Enologica, is situated. We’ll be based in a villa just outside of town.
- Bassano del Grappa, Veneto; Known for its wooden, 13th-century Ponte Vecchio bridge spanning the River Brenta and the sweeping views from its medieval Civic Tower. We’ll be based right in the heart of the old town.
- Bormio, Lombardia;, Situated in the centre of the upper Valtellina valley, in addition to being at the foot of Passo Gavia and Passo dello Stelvio, this is a big cycling town and a popular winter sports resort. The town also has several hot springs that have been tapped to provide water to three thermal baths. We’ll be based at an agriturismo just outside of town.
